Named in honor of Viktor Amazaspovich Ambartsumian {1908–1996}, a world renowned scientist, the founder of the Soviet School for Astrophysics, president of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, served as president of the IAU in 1961–1964, Director of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory.
