A charge-coupled device, a two-dimensional array of light-sensitive microelectronic semiconductor capacitors, is used as an imaging detector. With its high sensitivity and stability, the CCD has almost completely replaced the photographic emulsion and photomultiplier as the detector of choice in quantitative scientific work. (M 41572) _ _.
