With its 7000 inhabitants, Moletai is situated 63 km to the north of Vilnius amid the surrounding Lithuanian lakes and forests. Moletai was first mentioned in written sources in 1387. Since 1969 the Moletai Astronomical Observatory has been operating some 13 km from the town.
