Renowned mathematician Herbert A. Hauptman (b. 1917), since 1986 president of the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, New York, shared the 1985 Nobel prize in chemistry for his development of a mathematical model to determine the crystal structure of complex molecules from x-ray diffraction.
