Engelbert Humperdinck (1854–1921) was first assistant to Richard Wagner {see planet  (3992)}. Later he traveled throughout Europe and Northern Africa and became a teacher in different conservatories and art academies. His greatest success was the opera Hänsel und Gretel, which remains a favorite today, with its folksong melodies. (M 34356) _ _.
