Named in honor of the German astronomer Hugo Hans von Seeliger (1849–1924), director of the Munich Observatory. Von Seeliger investigated the movement of the perihelion of Mercury and was one of the founders of stellar astronomy. He published books on the motion of binaries and on the theory of the heliometer.
