Shoji Kato (b. 1935), professor emeritus of Kyoto University, has been engaged in studying theories concerning oscillations and waves in accretion disks embedded in active galactic nuclei and proto-planetary disks. He served as a member of the Japanese National Committee of the IAU during 1985-1994.
