Named for the Persian king Xerxes I (519–465 B.C.), son of Darius and Atossa {see, respectively, planets  (7210) and  (810)}. He continued the war against the Greeks but was defeated by them in naval battles at Salamis (480 B.C.) and Mycale (479 B.C.) and on land at Plateaa (479 B.C.). He was killed during a palace revolution. Aeschylus {see planet  (2876)} made him the main character in his tragedy Persai. (M 30800) _ _.
