Karl Kreil (1798-1862), the sixth director of the Klementinum observatory in Prague, carried out geomagnetic measurements in the Austro-Hungarian empire. He was later director of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geomagnetism in Vienna. The name was suggested by J. Ticha and M. Šolc.
