Named in honor of Frederick Harlan Harris, CCD guru. Harris worked at Caltech for the Palomar Observatory for many years before moving to the U.S. Naval Observatory, where he is involved in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Harris is a good friend of Caussols astronomer Alain Maury {see planet  (3780)}, and his patient help has been essential in the development of the CCD cameras for the Schmidt telescope with which this minor planet was discovered.
