Named in honor of John E. Rogers, Range Safety Officer at Point Mugu, California, and an amateur astronomer long known for his computer software and for his computation of orbits. More recently he has developed an astrometric system using a CCD camera and related software that he expertly uses at his home in Camarillo. The discoverer acknowledges his unstinting assistance in using this equipment to obtain crucial observations of newly-discovered near-earth objects, and from time to time he has also joined the discoverer’s team at Palomar to search for them.
