Named in memory of Friedrich Otto Schott (1851–1935), analytical chemist and glass engineer. In 1882 he founded a glass-technical laboratory and, together with E. Abbe {see planet  (5224)} two years later, also the Jenaer Glaswerk Schott und Genossen. Among the glass products Schott devised are filters, thermometers and the famous “Jenaer Glas”.
