Named to honor Caltech’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which was begun in 1979 by professor of chemical engineering, Frederick H. Shair. The purpose of SURF is to encourage collegial interaction between a research sponsor - Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff - and undergraduate students around a research problem of mutual interest. This tribute pays special note to those SURF students who have participated in asteroid discovery and physical observation programs at JPL. The SURF program offers a hands-on learning experience for the students and a mentor-challenging role for the research sponsors. (M 21133) _ _.
