Named for the famous Greek artist, born c. 500 B.C. in Athens, a pupil of Ageladus. Eminent as an architect, a sculptor in bronze and a painter, Phidias was a friend of Pericles and his work is said to have included sculptures for the Acropolis. Phidias died in prison in 432 B.C. (M 20160) _ _.
