Named in honor of Charles Fehrenbach {1914– }, who pioneered the successful use of the objective prism to measure stellar radial velocities. One of his instruments was used to identify members of the Magellanic Clouds from their radial velocities, starting in 1961 during the ESO site survey in southern Africa and continuing in 1968 on La Silla in Chile. He served as vice president of the IAU from 1973 to 1979, as a member of ESO and president of its Commission on Instruments, and as a member and president of the council of the Canada-France-Hawaii Observatory. His many honors include membership in the French Academy of Sciences, the gold medal of the CNRS and the grand scientific prize of the city of Paris. (M 17027) _ _.
