Named in honor of Joseph A. Burns, planetary astronomer at Cornell University. Burns’ wide-ranging research on solar-system dynamics includes the study of planetary rings, satellites, orbital evolution and tides, origin of the solar system, dust motions, and planetary and asteroid rotation.
