Named in honor of the outstanding Argentinian biochemist Luis Federico Leloir {1906–1987}, recipient of the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1970 and many other international honors. Born in France, he worked for several years in the United States. He has served as Extraordinary Research Professor at the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires and as director of the Instituto de Investigaciones Bioquimicas. As a member of the board of directors of the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas during 1958–1964 he had an important influence on scientific research in Argentina.
