Amsterdam, Dutch financial-business capital, started its existence in Oct. 1275 as a small fishing settlement on the Amstel river. By the seventeenth century it experienced its "golden age" as a mercantile center, and in the eighteenth century it was a center of tolerance for the publication of clandestine works.
