North Dakota became the 39th U.S. state when the Dakota Territory was divided in 1889. The name was derived from the indigenous people in the region. Located in the Upper Great Plains, the state is known for its agriculture, energy and hospitality. The state capital is Bismark, located on the banks of the Missouri River.
