Named in honor of Francesca E. DeMeo (b. 1984), a postdoctoral researcher at MIT who completed her 2010 Ph.D. thesis at the Paris Observatory. An expert in spectral studies of small bodies, she extended to near-infrared wavelengths a taxonomic classification system for minor planets.
