Named in memory of Barnaba Oriani (1752–1832), famous Italian astronomer and director of the Brera Observatory, Milan, from 1802 to 1832. Oriani studied the orbits of the planets, particularly Uranus, for which he published orbital elements and tables. A friend of Piazzi {see planet  (1000)}, he was involved with the early work on Ceres and published analytical formulae for the calculation of perturbations by Jupiter on objects with highly-inclined orbits. Oriani also inspired Plana and Carlini to carry out their research on the motion of the moon. (M 17981) _ _.
