Vilma Hugonnai (1847-1922) was the first Hungarian woman medical doctor, receiving her degree in 1879 in Zurich. When she returned to Hungary, she could not begin her career because the authorities refused to recognize her qualifications. In 1897 the authorities at last accepted her degree and she could start her own practice.
