The Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848) discovered the chemical law of constant proportions in 1828. This led to the development of the modern system of chemical notation. Berzelius is also credited with identifying the chemical elements silicon, selenium, thorium and cerium.
