At least half of his 12 other feature films, from The Killing (1956) and Paths of Glory (1957), through Peter Sellers’ performance in the brilliant Dr. Strangelove (1964), and on to A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Shining (1980) and Full Metal Jacket (1987), explored twentieth-century culture in a manner that was unprecedented in its artistry and its longevity.
