Named in memory of Eric Maria Remarque (1898–1970) German novelist, chiefly known for his Im Westen nichts Neues (“All Quiet on the Western Front”, 1929). At 18 he was drafted into the German army and wounded several times. His novel records the daily horrors of war in laconic understatement, in shocking contrast to patriotic rhetoric.
