Born in a village in Miyazaki Prefecture, he graduated from the nearby Nobeoka Middle School and later from Waseda University. Fond of both travel and sake, he wrote many poems about the joys and sorrows of life and nature. After his death, his complete works were published in 13 volumes. Name proposed by the discoverer following a suggestion by R. Ukishima and T. Sato.
