Akira Sawaoka (b. 1938) is a Japanese scientist who synthesized a new type of polycrystalline diamond by a new shock-wave consolidation technique. He also contributed to development of microgravity science utilizing the ISS as the former president of the Japan Society of Microgravity Application.
