Named in memory of Giovanni Virgilio Schiaparelli (1835–1910), discoverer of the connection between comets and meteor streams. A great observer of Mars, he discovered the famous “canali” and drew some fine maps. He made measurements of double stars and of the rotational periods of Mercury and Venus, and he discovered (69) Hesperia. From 1862 to 1900 he was director of the Brera Observatory in Milan.
