Named in honor of Dorothea Klumpke Roberts (1861–1943) {see also planet  (1040)}. She was the first lady to gain the degree Doctor of Mathematical Sciences at the Sorbonne. She assisted her husband Isaac Roberts (1829–1904), a building contractor who took up astronomy as a hobby when about 50, built two private observatories at Liverpool and Crowborough, and became a pioneer in the photography of clusters and nebulae.
