St. Petersburg and for a short period Euler’s {see planet  (2002)} successor as professor of mathematics. He was the first to realize that the object discovered by Herschel {see planet  (2000)} was a new planet. His name is also associated with comet 1770 I, for which he established the revolution period as less than six years. (M 4238)
