Named for the builder of King Minos’ {see planet (6239)} labyrinth, who was subsequently imprisoned there with his son Icarus. Both escaped, on wings of feathers and wax, but whereas Icarus was drowned when the wax in his wings melted {see planet (1566)}, Daedalus went on to Sicily and built there a temple to Apollo {see planet (1862)}. (M 3758)
This mythological figure also exists as a lunar crater.
