Berlin-born Bruno Walter (1876-1962; originally B. W. Schlesinger), great German-American conductor, was known particularly for interpretations of Mozart, Bruckner and Mahler. He lived in exile after 1938, endeavoring to preserve a German mind and culture. After World War II he conducted in Europe again.
