Mary Lea Shane, née Heger (1897–1983), wife of Lick Observatory director C. Donald Shane {see planet  (1994)}, was an astronomer in her own right. She identified the interstellar Na I absorption lines and discovered the first of the mysterious diffuse interstellar bands. She also established the Lick Observatory Archives. (M 41570) _ _.
