James M. Early (1922-2004) was a principal in the development of transistors for the Telstar 1 communication satellite. He discovered the space-charge layer widening in semiconductors, now called the “Early Effect”. He was inducted into the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame and was a Fellow of IEEE.
