German architect and archaeologist Robert Koldewey (1855-1925) revealed the legendary Babylon of the Bible as an historical reality, for 18 years excavating in southern Iraq. He found the great fortress wall of the city, the famed Ishtar Gate, the temple of Marduk and the processional avenue to it.
