A brilliant and influential jazz bassist, Raymond Matthews Brown (1926-2002) played in Dizzy Gillespie's band and later with the Oscar Peterson trio. For a while married to and musical director for Ella Fitzgerald, he was part of the L.A. Four in the 1970s and led the Ray Brown Trio from 1984 until the day he died.
