Named in honor of Alessandro Rossi (b. 1964), member of the Group of Satellite Flight Dynamics at the Istituto CNECE in Pisa. Rossi is an expert in space geodesy and participated in the Laser Geodynamics Satellite (LAGEOS) mission. He also studies the manmade space debris that pollutes the near-earth environment. Rossi has used his expertise to study natural “debris” around space mission targets to optimize encounter/rendezvous operations. He has also studied the hazard of earth-crossing objects.
