Named for Hannu Karttunen, Finnish astronomer and mathematician. Karttunen has developed a rather general method to model the lightcurves of minor planets and, in collaboration with the discoverer and other colleagues, has sought to understand lightcurves and phase curves in terms of body morphology and large-scale albedo features. He has recently served as an editor of a comprehensive college-level text on fundamental astronomy, which has been published in Finnish and English. (M 12977) _ _.
