Named in honor of Kaare Aksnes {1938– }, celestial mechanician at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory from 1971 to 1978, well-known for his work on both artificial and natural satellites, especially for his detailed analyses of observations of the mutual phenomena of the Galilean satellites.
