British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was one of the twentieth century's premier logicians and author with A. N. Whitehead of Principia Mathematica. Also known for his antiwar activism, humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950.
