Hungarian astronomer and professor Pál Tittel (1784-1831), director of the Eger and Buda observatories, was a catholic priest and member of the Hungarian Academy of Science. For several years in his youth he was a pupil of Gauss in Göttingen. This minor planet was discovered on the 172nd anniversary of his death.
