Leo Baeck (1873-1956) was a leading liberal Jewish religious thinker. His The Essence of Judaism appeared in 1905. After liberation from Theresienstadt he participated in the resumption of German-Jewish dialogue. He became president of both the Council of Jews from Germany and the World Union for Progressive Judaism.
