In 1905 Eugenio Stoppani (1850-1917) erected a mountain refuge, now the site of the Sormano Observatory, in the place where his father Edoardo Stoppani (1818-1892) died accidentally. Antonio Stoppani (1824-1891) (probably a distant relative) was a distinguished palaeontologist.
