Named for John A. Wood {1932– }, geologist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, associate director of the planetary sciences division from 1981 to 1986. For more than 30 years, Wood has been a leading investigator of the petrography and petrology of chondritic meteorites as samples of primordial planetary materials. He also studied lunar rocks, beginning with those returned from the Apollo 11 mission. Wood is renowned for his theory that lunar anorthosites accumulated from a global magma ocean that developed very early in the history of the moon. (M 18464) _ _.
