Jacques Piccard (1922-2008) was a Belgian marine explorer. In 1960 he made the deepest ocean descent ever accomplished, using the submersible bathyscaphe, developed by his father, Auguste Piccard. The discovery of living organisms at that depth of 11 km led to a ban on dumping nuclear waste in ocean trenches.
