The Japanese prefecture of Ibaraki houses three research centers (Tsukuba, Tokai and Kashima) that contain more than 300 research institutes. The capital city, Mito, is famous for the Kairakuen Garden and its 3000 plum trees. The coast was damaged by the March 2011 tsunami.
