Leonhard Hess Stejneger (1851-1943) was a Norwegian-born American ornithologist and author of more than 400 scientific publications on birds, reptiles and seals. During a visit to Bering Island he became fascinated by the life of G. W. Steller, about whom he wrote a biography in 1936.
