José Ripero (b. 1955), an active observer for 35 years, has made more than 60 000 brightness estimates of variable stars and supernovae. Co-founder of the M 1 observers group and president of the Centro Astronomico de Avila, Ripero has taught astronomy for 20 years and wrote the book El Vigia del Cosmos.
