Coleman Hawkins (1904–1969) was the first to bring the tenor saxophone to prominence as a solo instrument, helping transform it into the symbol of Jazz itself. His famous 1939 rendition of “Body and Soul” includes notes “outside the galaxy of his time”. The name was suggested by Jane Ira Bloom. (M 36128) _ _.
