Named in honor of Martin Šolc (b. 1949), Czech astronomer and head of the Astronomical Institute of Charles University in Prague since 1987. His work deals with cosmic dust, dust in comets and isotopes. He participated in data evaluation from the Vega and Giotto missions to comet 1P/Halley in 1986-1987. At present he collaborates on the ISO project with the Institut für Kernphysik in Heidelberg. Much of his time is devoted to teaching. He is also working on a history of Czech astronomy, together with his wife Alena Šolcová (b. 1950). Name proposed by discoverers J. Ticha, M. Tichy and Z. Moravec.
